Study finds that corporate wellness programs can improve employee engagement, satisfaction

Savvy small business owners know that employees are one of the most important business resources they have. As a result, keeping them satisfied, motivated and productive is critical to positioning a company for small business growth in the recovery.

To achieve this aim, Canadian small business owners may want to focus on employee wellness initiatives, suggested a recent report from Right Management.

A subsidiary of global employment services firm Manpower, Right Management found employees are eight times more engaged with their work and company when wellness is "a priority" in the workplace.

The study also found that, when wellness is a priority, employees are 3.5 times more likely to feel encouraged to be innovative and creative.

"When thoughtfully integrated into overall strategy, wellness is a powerful positive driver of employee engagement, productivity and performance," said Owen Sullivan, executive vice president of Manpower and CEO of Right Management. "In the recovery, success will depend on creating and sustaining a competitive advantage; this survey demonstrates wellness initiatives as an important key to building that edge."

A focus on wellness is not just important for employees, either - the Wall Street Journal recently reported that entrepreneurs should prioritise their own health and wellness to avoid burnout.
